As a way of encouraging the reading habit Marvel Next published spellbinders that was enticing for all those who came across it. With the setting around magic not one but six publications came to be. The writer and graphic designer being Mike Carey and Mike Perkins respectively.

In a fictional school, John Hawthorne, magic is the norm. The main character is a teenager Kim Vesco. She is new at the school and her neighbor Chad Barrow went to the same school. Originally from Chicago her family finds a new home at Salem. Chad explains to her she could cope in her new the school if was outgoing and did not engage in witchcraft.

Her first encounter was with an embodiment in form of air. She was attacked while at the institution, a scary way to be welcomed. Luckily for her she was saved by the characters Mink and Liza Beth. Magic being the order of Salem it was not a surprise for her to encounter with a wall. Learning she could talk with ghosts she unwillingly called out a large number. They warned about the pillar and commanded her to take charge of all witches.

During a lab session, fire broke out. She quickly saved herself. Later Chad passed invited her to a party at school. Amidst their conversation he learned she lived with foster parents. The witches acquired this piece of information and concluded that she was one of them. They performed magic to protect her but they ignored her physical safety.

Later that night, she was attacked by an evil monster. Renata confronted the attacker who saved himself by becoming a bird and flew away as the others came into view. They realized that their protection was not against physical attacks. Renata had the capacity to change into different things.

The witches told her about their backstory, the Thief, an occult being capable of stealing their power and that the pillar of smoke, their source of strength. They offered to take her to this handiwork. She declined but later agreed. Walking deep into the wood they set up traps against unwanted parties. Chad, followed them effortlessly and attacked the guardian.

She could clearly see the smoke coming from the artifact. In front of them, the villain had destroyed the guardian and was ready to devour them. Definitely he was the new thief. They were not strong enough for him and they were powerless in their fight against him. When they came around they were in a place where magic would not act. A ghost instructed Kim to apologize to the debris of the pillar. She was transported by magic to another place with skeletons and carcasses. She would be the keeper.

Meanwhile, the others escaped the original thief back. Back in Salem they found other witches defenseless and Chad was bringing back to life his dead girlfriend. They stopped him and he died. Leaving school, Kim was assured that everything was bound to work well.
