Understanding The Difference Of Figurative And Genre Art

By Enid Hinton

A lot of people are wondering why art is very pricey especially if it is really made by someone who has made a name in the industry. This is because you can expect that their pieces are of the same caliber. And it is something that is very valuable. The value that these pieces possess can sometimes be too high that it is not attainable for the common people.

When you try to create something and it is finished, it would fall into various categories. The classification would be done through determining the methods that it was used. There are also others that is classified through knowing the purpose of creating it. But most of the time, the artwork is determined by both these factors. Two of the best examples would be figurative and genre art.

People might think that just because it is considered an artwork, it belongs to the same branch. There is more to it than that. And surprisingly, it is what makes it unique and more beautiful. For example. Figurative artworks are the type of pieces where in the images are derived from a true event in the history. Usually it has something to do with a very iconic moment.

One of the major different between the two is that genre pieces can just be created through the use of the imagination of the artist. It can be real but it can also be something that was just imagined. It can be confusing at times because the final pieces look the same.

One of the distinguishing element of a figurative portrait is the time being applied. You can see that it is derived from a specific era. This is one of the most important feature that distinguishes this from the other categories. It aims to show the type of culture that is present during that time.

Another thing that can be noticed is the clever mix of an intellectual concept with a common form of art. For example, the gods and goddesses in Greece where created to show a precise work for geometry and proportions. It is very difficult to achieve the perfect balance, thus they are pieces that are still celebrated up to this day.

If you are confused between the abstract arts and the figurative ones, you do not have to be. Abstracts are those works that you can barely recognized. There is an image but it would be hard to know what it is. The figurative ones are clearly defined so the images can be seen clearly.

Another branch of art would be genre types. The usual imagery that you can see are daily activities being performed. It tries to showcase the recent activities in the culture and time of today. So you can say that it aims to record what people are doing.

It does not only apply to the way of life of the people. You can also categorized marine life and the events happening in the surrounding as that of genre classification. That is why it is sometimes called as scene painting. The pieces were made available during the time when average people also have the opportunity to purchase arts.
