When designing a product there are always several aspects of the product mix to take into account. Price, place and promotion are just some examples of these. However, probably the most interesting and directly influential piece of the product mix is the packaging. A perfect example to explore this idea would be through the medium of food packaging illustration. The food industry is a highly competitive one. Visitors to the supermarket hallways are always inundated with hundreds of different and colorful about which brand of food to buy.

It is always better to meet face-to-face rather than to source a designer over the internet, to do so may be cheaper but will probably only result in a low quality output. Also being able to see a designer's portfolio of work firsthand will let you know what their quality of work is like.

The third important tip is that of authenticity. Packaging that is run-of-the-mill or generic will never attract the eye. Packages should be catching to the eye and instantly interesting and enticing to the viewer of the item in question.

Shelf impact is another idea to take into consideration. What will the packages look like when they are placed side-by-side in large numbers? How will they fit together or stack-up? Streamlined or inventive ideas in this regard will pull customers to your section of the store and will ensure success as more and more of your items fly off the shelves.

Always remember to give feedback to your designer during this process. Letting them know exactly what you feel about each design will go a long way towards helping them develop a design that is more to your liking. Look at the design process as a journey rather than a destination.
